What will happen if we DO mine in Antarctica?
If, by any chance, we mine in Antarctica, this may bring some challenges as well as opportunities. There are good impacts and bad impacts with this act of mining.
On the good side of mining, the miners will extract 10 billion barrels of minerals off Antarctica, and it doesn't include gold! We would be able to sell it to companies that need the minerals - such as Jewellers who need gold and engineers that need metal. We will be able to earn lots of money that could help us extract more minerals around the world.
But, on the bad side there are a lot of concerns such as the scientists argueing that if we mine in Antarctica, this will cause the ozone layer to expand in size. The hole in the ozone layer in Antarctica appears every spring, and by mining, it will only make it worse. The purpose of the ozone layer is to protect us from the sun's bright killer rays. If the sun's bright rays are too strong and brake the ozone layer, this will cause people, plants, and all living creatures to be harmed. Leading this to turn into a global crisis for our world. If the suns rays reaches up to a temperature too hot for our atmosphere's liking and we mine in the area of the ozone hole, then this weakens the ozone hole itself, leading our mining to damage the ozone layer. Since the ozone layer is already weakened, the heatness of the sun's rays will break through the ozone layer, which protects us from the heat of the sun, causing the earth to be sliced in half by the strong heated rays. By this, we lose the gravitational pull because the center of the earth will be destroyed and loose. Leaving all the matter and particles to explode and evaporate to nothingness. Then the chaos will happen. Humans can not stay on earth, animals too. Plants suffocate beacause of no oxygen.
Another problem is that when we mine, we will be using transportation and mechanisms to help us mine our minerals. When we do this procedure,we increase global warming and also giveout pollution to the air of Antarctica, causing the land of this continent to melt, which again, can cause global phenomenon crisis. By this action, we can cause floods across nations and the living creatures in Antarctica will die.
One of the main reasons of why we are banned from mining in Antarctica is the chance of leakage. As you can see from the picture below, the minerals that the Earth is running out of are near the edges. Of course, when we mine, the minerals like petroleum/Oil will leak through the waters of Antarctica. This can cause the minerals to spread across the Antarctic Sea and harm the animals in the water. The leakage may poison creatures like- emperor penguins, whales, seals and fish. For the fishermen, this is a huge problem since when the fish are poisoned, they can no longer sell it to their customers and their business may need to be shut down. It may destroy half the land and can spread through the seas worldwide.
If we do mine in Antarctica, million's of problems will be caused- both environmentally and economically.
